About this tool
Counts words, characters (with and without spaces), lines, paragraphs, and sentences in your text, in real time as you type or paste. Useful for articles, school essays, social media posts with limits, abstracts, and any text where you need to respect a length limit.
How to use
- Paste or type the text in the box.
- The statistics update automatically with every change.
- Compare the numbers against the limit you need to meet.
Frequently asked questions
- How is a word defined?
- Any sequence of characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks. Punctuation doesn't count as a word, but hyphenated or apostrophed words ("mother-in-law", "don't") count as one.
- Does the character count include spaces?
- Both totals are shown: total characters (including spaces and line breaks) and characters without spaces. Check the one that matches the limit you need to respect, some systems count one way, others count the other.
- Does it work with text in any language?
- Yes. Works well with any language that uses spaces to separate words (Latin, Cyrillic, Greek). For languages without spaces between words (Chinese, Japanese, Thai), the word count isn't reliable, but the character count is still useful.
