About this tool
Calculates the tip on a restaurant bill and splits the total between several people. Useful when travelling to countries with different tipping traditions, dining in a group and wanting to split fairly, or when service was notably good (or bad) and you want to adjust accordingly.

Frequently asked questions
- What tip percentage should I leave?
- Depends heavily on the country. In Portugal and much of Europe, tipping is optional and around 5% to 10% for normal service. In the United States it's practically mandatory, with 15% to 20% as standard. In some Asian countries it's frowned upon. Look up local customs before travelling.
- Is the tip calculated before or after tax?
- There are defenders of both. The more common (and more generous) approach is to calculate on the total including tax. This tool uses whatever amount you enter, so you can pick either as your base.
- What if a service charge is already included?
- If the bill already includes a "service charge", a tip is usually optional. Add one only for exceptional service. This tool doesn't distinguish, just don't calculate extra tip in that case.
